Description:
VLC refuses to play certain AVIs which are run fine by mplayer (and by VLC on my other Arch install, funny as it may be).

Packages:
VLC 0.8.6c-1
ffmpeg 20070505-4

This is the error VLC outputs in the CLI:
[stijn@okeanos bsg3]$ vlc 12\ Rapture.avi
VLC media player 0.8.6c Janus
[00000287] main decoder error: no suitable decoder module for fourcc `XVID'.
VLC probably does not support this sound or video format.
[00000265] main playlist: stopping playback

It only runs the audio, no video on screen (just black).

It seems Arch is not alone with this bug, googling turns up results for Gentoo, Sabayon (related to one another, i know), and Ubuntu. ffmpeg seems to be involved.
This task depends upon

This appears to be related to this forum post: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=35011

As the post suggested, I was able to get this working by recompiling the abs package against (possibly) newer libraries on my machine.
