Description:
Is there a future proof way to restore the previous password
prompt for crypttab entries with password set to none?
The new vanilla version displays the disk name, dm name,
and also shows asterisks for the characters typed in.

Also it prints an info message with the crypt info of the
luks device opened.

Sorry, I'm not following. Could you explain what behavior you want to restore? You don't want the asterisks shown?

Yes, the asterisks should not be shown.
Whether the device id or the crypto info are shown are less important and I leave it to you guys to make a decision about that.

You can switch off the asterisks by pressing TAB, or BACKSPACE as the first character. The behavior is documented here: <http://0pointer.de/public/systemd-man/systemd-ask-password.html>.

Interesting discussion. Valid points on both sides but in non-graphical mode like pty login prompts it's been common to not display asterisks. Is there a switch or systemd-tools option to restore the previous behavior? I don't use desktop environments or gdm/xdm and don't know their behavior to make a comparison.

Yes I did read that. Thanks for finding that out. Is there really no flag to switch somewhere to restore the old behavior? If there isn't, I suppose I'll have to remember to press Tab. It's not the fault of you guys but what has that to do with user friendliness? If someone wants to correct a mistake in the pass prompt they can just press C-u and re-enter again. Easy as that.

Any idea about the luks device crypto info printed with the newer initscripts? Is that configurable?

Some people want asterisks (typically users who are used to the graphical login where feedback on passwords have been the standard for years), others do not. Typically the ones who prefer no asterisks are the "expert" users, so it sort of makes sense to require the experts to learn one extra key press.

Why would we hide the crypto info? If there is a reason for it, I'm sure it could be done, but it seems useful to me...
