right now mplayer can play .3gp files but no sound is heard. i remember being able to hear sound in the past... afair this is just a configure option and extra deps at compile time, i do not believe it is needed to make amrnb and/or amrwb a dependency. An install msg would be sufficient..

vlc support would also be nice; there's a vlc-3gp build in AUR.
This task depends upon

hmm, this is related to  FS#7001  and  FS#10763 ,
Thomas, can you please take a look at  FS#7001  so we will have a decission on that issue?

The license of the AMR code does not allow us to distribute it afaik. I think there was a possibility to link against a dummy library and replace that library with real code then, but I am not sure anymore.

It'k OK if it's not distributed in the repos if. during compile, the devs compile with 3gp audio support and add a msg saying: Because of licence issues, for 3gp audio support install amrnb and amrwb in AUR.

just got out of #mplayer and people there believe it's allowed to redistribute as binaries...

IF that is the case, then I'd gladly add AMR support. Where do I find more info about the lincensing restrictions or non-restrictions of the AMR code?
