The search doesn't work/work sometimes? on wiki.archlinux.org. if you go to google and type:

site:wiki.archlinux.org searchterms

you will have much more luck at getting results...

for example i was trying to find out how to install arch from an usb stick and the wiki search yielded no results for the word 'usb' but when i tried google's search i could find the article at once.

If you need to search for terms with 3 letters, try using a google "site:wiki.archlinux.org USB" search.

IIRC the wiki search doesnt work with 3 character searchterms.

It does but you have to change the mysql configuration and rebuilt the index. Of course this would mean a increase of disk space used and perhaps a minimal decrease in performance. But with a stop word list this should not be a big problem.

Can't we just use the google search? The google search is great and how it is now is unacceptable when we have so much good content you can't search for...

As our wiki grows in size, this becomes less of a realistic possability.
Maybe we should just remove the mediawiki search altogether, and put in a google search box.

The search is not down. It is working fine here for most things, minus the three letter restriction noted above.

We won't be decreasing the three character search limit, it's actually a mysql default rather than a wiki setting, and a sane one at that. Replacing the search box with a google search isn't a bad idea though, definitely something to think about.

Likewise, the search works as intended... meaning that the default wiki search only searches page titles, and you need to click the other submit button to search within page texts. This is default mediawiki behavior.

okay... i wasn't aware of this "default search behaviour" and also it's kind of bad that one can't search for three-letter-words..
