Description:

Gnome shell crashes when trying to reload (Alt+F2 => r) when running on X11.
The bug has been reported upstream:

* https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/mutter/-/issues/2873
* https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-shell/-/issues/7050

A very simple patch is available:

* https://github.com/dmo60/CoverflowAltTab/files/13062016/patch.txt

which is explained in the thread: https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-shell/-/issues/7050#note_1876598

Gnome moves very slowly when it comes to fixing regressions like this. Is it possible to apply this patch before upstream finally fixes it? Thank you!

I just found out that this was reported here under gnome-shell: https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/79884

Yes, this is indeed not our bug, but I still hope we can patch it for now since it's a serious regression.

Have you tried upstream merge request 3329 [1]?

As mentioned numerous times elsewhere, Arch much prefers to only backport fixes once committed upstream. You should be working with upstream to try and get a fix committed. If no interest from the PM this will be closed as a dupe of  FS#79884 . Please also try the suggestion from @loqs.

The simple patch:

https://github.com/dmo60/CoverflowAltTab/files/13062016/patch.txt

works fine for me, but indeed a more proper fix is the one mentioned by @loqs. I knew that arch wants to stay as close as possible to upstream, but I didn't know about the preference to only backport *committed* changes. I do agree that this is a very reasonable policy though, maybe it's good to add it to:

https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Arch_package_guidelines#Working_with_upstream

Then I am okay for this to be closed. Let us hope gnome eventually fixes this... (the merge request mentioned by @loqs seems to cause issues for wayland so that needs to be resolved first).
