Description:

After upgrading a linux kernel package from 6.1.12 to version 6.2.1, messages like:

nouveau 0000:00:0d.0: fifo: CACHE_ERROR - ch 0 [kworker/0:0[7]] subc 2 mthd xxxx data 00000000

Sway and other applications run and work fine.

I rolled back the kernel to 6.1.12. I don't get these messages anymore. These appear specifically when using the linux kernel version 6.2.1

Additional info:
linux kernel version: 6.2.1-arch1-1
GPU: nvidia geforce 7025 / nforce 630a (rev a2) (lspci)
GPU driver: nouveau

Steps to reproduce:

1) Update your linux kernel to 6.2.1.
2) Check the system log.

I'm not seeing the warnings here in a fresh VM with Nvidia card passed through. I guess it only applies to some cards. There are quite a few hits when searching for that error online e.g. [1]. So if everything still works...they're only warnings afterall. Either way, this is an upstream issue which means there is nothing Arch can do here. You could try contacting the nouveau devs. Please let us know what you find out.

Hello.

I wrote to the upstream bug tracker about this problem:
https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=187111#c6

Yes, the graphical shell works and you could ignore such messages, but nouveau (or the kernel itself) spams them very often and in large numbers.

For comparison, I attach links to the system log (0x0.st, zerobin.net)
1:
https://0x0.st/HzcX.txt
https://zerobin.net/?4f2acc4ca3de195e#rEwA6nZ3tNUMPun2bTlwtw7+7M/v178j3IqNnTUzqNE=

2 (larger in size, more similar messages):
https://0x0.st/Hzc8.txt
https://zerobin.net/?cf345e58fc119a14#j+ZWG6/okKeSGDGhjNOFO9OCOM0+SHFH34Fcc6XqUf0=

If anyone else has the same problem, I can recommend to roll back the linux package to 6.1.12 or use linux-lts, which currently provides a 6.1.14 kernel. On these versions of the linux kernel I do not notice a similar problem.

Still happening with latest 6.2.9 kernel? I see no response to your bugzilla comment. If you need to contact the nouveau team directly the details are here [1]

Hello.

Yes, this problem is still showing up on fresh versions of linux kernel (I checked today on 6.2.9).

Recently I noticed that a similar problem was reported in the nouveau bugtracker [1]. Also wrote there, attached a file with the session log.
Everything still works fine if you use linux lts.

Ok, good. It seems there is progress in the upstream ticket with a bisect identifying the cause. Not much Arch can do here...hopefully a fix will be forthcoming.
