See
- include/cddb/cddb_ni.h:#define DEFAULT_SERVER "freedb.org" + include/cddb/cddb_ni.h:#define DEFAULT_SERVER "gnudb.gnudb.org" Otherwise the server needs to be changed in every client supporting such and for clients not supporting alternative servers (or in general) one would map the gnudb.gnudb.org IP to freedb.org in /etc/hosts And yes, but upstream is kinda dead since 2009. So I'd not hope for a new release anytime soon. |

(So they'd have to fall into the AUR together)
Also the subject might be phrased too drastic - it's technically not "useless" since, as mentioned in the OP, clients can change the CDDB server and perfectly rely on the library otherwise.
(I randomly stumbled over this and failed to check that it's hardly used by repo packages anymore anyway)
Ftr, installed asunder; it supports altering the cddb server, the query kinda succeeds, but at least for the disc I randomly tested, it only has album and album artist.
Meanwile "cd-info --cddb-server=gnudb.gnudb.org" gets me the full data set.
