Description:
When attempting to run an X application in GNOME on Wayland, the application fails to start and hangs indefinitely.

This affects Firefox, Chrome, Emacs etc. Firefox launches and functions normally when run with GDK_BACKEND=wayland. Downgrading to a snapshot from May 10 fixes the issue.

Additional info:

Running an XWayland app under strace shows it hangs trying to connect to /tmp/.X11-unix/X0.

journalctl shows this message:
gnome-shell[1293]: Failed to init X11 display: Unknown error

Steps to reproduce:
Launch gnome-shell from a tty with `dbus-run-session gnome-session`. (Probably other ways of starting GNOME work too.)
Attempt to open any X-only program (e.g. Emacs).

I've now upgraded my whole system except for gnome-shell, which I kept at version 1:40.0-1, and the issue did not reappear, so I can confirm that this is an issue with gnome-shell 1:40.1-1 specifically.

I can confirm the same. Also, gnome-shell --wayland to reproduce on archiso
