No rush, I don't know if anyone else will notice.

src/linux-2.6.5/.tmp_versions needs to be in /usr/src/linux-2.6.5. Didn't run into this till wlan-ng... and only if I'd built nothing else with that kernel (I bet if I built vmware before it would have worked).

You need the whole .tmp_versions directory? It's 3.2 mb.

Yes, for the upgrade to 2.6.6, I had to copy the .tmp_versions directory again (after a compile of 2.6.6).
