Reason for closing:  Implemented
Additional comments about closing:  kodi 19 will come with python3 only as it no longer supports python2, this is already implemented in the upcoming kodi 19 package

Thanks for re-opening. v19 has released, and that is why I filed this.

Preferably don't open bugs for packages which are simply out of date. But Ike wanted it assigned so it is.

  • Field changed: Summary ([kodi] Drop python2 dependencies → [kodi] upgrade to today's kodi 19 release since it switches from python2 to python3)
This is not a very useful ticket.

Kodi v19 was just released today, the old version which we currently package does not work with python3 and the new version which is duly flagged out of date does not work with python2.

It's *impossible* to get wrong, all you need to do is flag the package OOD.

No, anthraxx wanted it assigned and Ike said "fine, whatever". :)

Yes, because there is a security implication involved with python2 that can now be solved. we also create CVE tickets for packages, partially also when simple upgrades can solve them.

The CVE is for python2, not kodi, and the security implication is for python2, not kodi, and neither of them are solved for all the python2 still in the repos and on my laptop (which does not include kodi!).

So please open a separate, more valid bug report against python2 in order to actually solve the issue.

Meanwhile this bug report can remain open for political reasons that have nothing to do with security and everything to do with the *general* and ongoing purge of python2 for the last couple of years. Even though we don't keep bug reports open for any other packages that directly flout the bug reporting guidelines "do not report bugs for out of date packages", without actually having a security rationale for opening the ticket anyway.

I maintain I was correct in originally closing it. Please do not report bug reports for out of date packages, not even if you think the maintainer isn't going to notice that the package doesn't build if you disobey the release notes. That is what flagging out of date is for.

In the event that an actual security issue is discovered *in kodi*, not in its dependencies, feel free to report a security bug stating that the software is vulnerable, with recommended guidance that may include "upgrade to version X which contains a fix".
