The upgrade to version 18 made a game I am playing not work anymore (more information at https://community.sigames.com/topic/431966-fm18-crashes-immidiately-on-launch/). At first I thought this is an issue with the proprietary game not being standards-compliant. However, looking at the mesa release notes (https://mesa3d.org/relnotes/18.0.0.html) reveals that this is considered a "development" release, which came with a warning: "People who are concerned with stability and reliability should stick with a previous release or wait for Mesa 18.0.1".

Shouldn't it then have been appropriate to wait until 18.0.1 to push the update into the repositories?

You aren't forced to -Syu when such new stuff comes in but this is Arch linux and not some distribution that stays with outdated software. Either downgrade or work with upstream to fix it if it hasn't been solved in mesa-git.
