Running Arch inside of vmware(server or workstation), on a monitor capable of up to 1280x1024 resolution, no framebuffer settings are recognized. I have tried things like 0x31B and 0x31A, and as low as 773. Regardless of what vga= setting is used, it always returns the "you passed an undefined mode number"... [Enter] to view available modes or [Space] to continue thing.

I have no problem with any framebuffer settings in vmware with resolutions up to 1024x768 (my monitor cannot show 1280x1024). :-/
Have you tried kernel26beyond with vesa-tng?

I've had this same problem with Arch before. Something in Arch's config disallows setting the vga= parameter higher than the kernels checks allow, whereas in Gentoo, others, it lets you set it to anything you want, and it just doesn't work if you go too high.

Maybe compare Arch's and Gentoo's config in the framebuffer area? If they will be similar then maybe Gentoo has some patch?
