The current package of gpgme is compiled in the absence of gnupg2, which means that it doesn't have support for S/MIME signing/encryption. Applications such as KDE's KMail rely on gpgme for their encryption/signing frameworks, so the current version of gpgme leaves KMail with just OpenPGP support (and no S/MIME). Furthermore, upon trying to start KMail's Certificate Manger (kleopatra), the user gets the following (daunting) error:

"The crypto plugin could not be initialized.
Certificate Manager will terminate now."

Recompiling and using gpgme with gnupg2 already present on the system solves these issues.
