Currently the 1.x.x (Gtk 2) and 2.x.x (Gtk 3) branches of the Whisker Menu plugin are maintained, but eventually the 1.x.x support will be dropped. As more and more of the official Xfce packages migrate to Gtk 3, it might be a solid idea to migrate this plugin as well, or to provide a separate package with the Gtk 3 version.

I fully agree, but xfce4-whiskermenu-plugin 2.x.x does not build with the version of exo that is currently in [extra], that depends on gtk2: https://www.archlinux.org/packages/extra/x86_64/exo/

When exo is updated, I will try upgrading to 2.x.x.

The latest version of Exo should allow the GTK+3 versions of xfce4-whiskermenu-plugin to be built.

When testing xfce4-whiskermenu-plugin by starting xfce4-panel and adding it to the panel, version 1.7.5 works great, but version 2.1.5 crashes.

I'm using Sway. While Wayland-based windowmanagers are still relatively new, Wayland has come to stay. KDE has stopped developing for X11 and are now focusing all new development efforts on Wayland.

It would be an advantage to have a version of xfce4-whiskermenu-plugin that also worked with Sway, since xfce4-panel can readily be used by different windowmanagers.

Will not upgrade yet because of the above problem. Will try again with the Gtk 3 version in a month or two. Please re-open this bug report if a reminder is needed.

EDIT: Oddly enough, despite the coincidence I did not notice you had just upgraded this, only that you adopted it -- hence why I reopened this ticket. I wanted to know, in part, if you were *going* to upgrade it. :p

I can confirm that version 2.1.6 tested with xfce4-panel version 4.12.2 does not crash when I tested it. The upstream changelog states that this version "fixed a crash when last search action is deleted." I'm not sure if this is the bug Alexander was referring to, but the newest version appears to be quite stable.

EDIT: The version that we were shipping was many versions out of date, and the upstream devs have fixed numerous bugs since 1.7.5, so it seems preferable to ship a stable version and work on Wayland support next.

The GTK3 version still crashes under Wayland, but the package does build with the newest version of Exo, and runs well within X11. I tested it with GNOME3 and xfce4-panel under Wayland and the following error is produced:

"(wrapper-2.0:2972): Gtk-WARNING **: 21:59:53.062: GtkPlug only works under X11"

Seeing as the XFCE desktop has no support for Wayland and has been ported to GTK3, it seems reasonable to support the latest GTK3 version of this related package in our repos. So...this FS is "fixed," but work has to be done upstream to properly make the GTK3 widget run under Wayland.

mmm, seems reasonable, so thanks for upgrading already. :)

If anyone wants to run legacy versions in order to use with wayland on unrelated DEs, I guess they could upload a -wayland or -gtk2 package using the legacy version (branch?)
