Description:
After the upgrade from kernel 4.8.13-1 to kernel 4.9.6-1, the execution of xinit reported problems to connect to the X server ("Waiting for the X server to accept connections").
This continues until it times out.
In the output of dmesg (see attachment), some time after the execution of xinit kernel coredumps are printed.
According to the symptoms, this issue seems to be related to https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/52238

If I blacklist the nouveau kernel module, the problem does not arise.

Additional info:
* package version(s)
** linux 4.9.6-1
** linux-headers 4.9.6-1
** xorg-server 1.19.1-1

* configurations/logs
**dmesg output (see attachment)
* hardware

The NVS 5400M supports optimus.

On my machine the only thing I do is use reverse prime as stated in https://nouveau.freedesktop.org/wiki/Optimus/ in the section "Using outputs on discrete GPU".
I just issue the command "xrandr --setprovideroutputsource nouveau Intel", nothing else in that regard.

If that is using optimus, then yes - I do.

I cannot reproduce the issue. Is it still valid for you?
