the client instantly crashes out, leaving this message in journalctl:

Dec 02 01:01:12 thegatekeeper systemd[1]: Failed to start Dynamic DNS Update Client.
Dec 02 01:01:12 thegatekeeper systemd[1]: ddclient.service: Unit entered failed state.
Dec 02 01:01:12 thegatekeeper systemd[1]: ddclient.service: Failed with result 'exit-code'.

This leaves ddclient unusable.
