Using the testing version, Gnome-Software 3.22.1, I noticed that packagekit is no longer a dependency, which is strange because without it Gnome-Software cannot install or update packages.

Further, even with Packagekit installed, Gnome-Software is only showing me the apps that I have installed. Going into the categories, not a single package is listed that isn't already on my pc, making it essentially useless for installing or updating programs.
This task depends upon

Correct. Packagekit support has been removed as it cannot be safely used. Flatpak is still supported.

I thought that packagekit and alpm were working pretty well together... In which case, what is the use case for Gnome-Software now? It won't be able to do updates/installs from arch repositories, so it's kind of pointless now.

Too bad it is necessary for a user friendly way to deal with Gnome-Shell app-folders, even though that functionality has been broken for quite some time. Bleh. What a mess.

Also, if Gnome-Software really now does only exist as a Flatpak frontend, shouldn't the gnome flatpak repos enabled as part of the Gnome-Software installation?

i.e.:
wget https://sdk.gnome.org/keys/gnome-sdk.gpg
$ flatpak remote-add --gpg-import=gnome-sdk.gpg gnome https://sdk.gnome.org/repo/
$ flatpak remote-add --gpg-import=gnome-sdk.gpg gnome-apps https://sdk.gnome.org/repo-apps/

Otherwise the user ends up like I did with a completely non-functional Gnome-Software, with no repositories to pull from

From version 3.26.5-2, you can install the separated gnome-software-packagekit-plugin package if you want to get PackageKit support in GNOME Software.
