It would be nice if hdparm was avaliable when installing Arch. It would speed up things a bit.

It turns on dma on disks, both cd and hd. http://gentoo-wiki.com/MAN_hdparm take a look, if you dont know what hdparm is, or does.

I know what hdparm does. :-) But AFAIK kernel 2.6 turns DMA mode by default (at least on all my machines it is so). So I'm wondering how hdparm can speedup HDD even more? It can enable/disable write-cache, so this result in speed improvements, but many HDDs have write-cache enabled by default (or this is enabled by kernel for them?).
So, if I understand correctly, modern kernels and modern hardware doesn't need hdparm.
However, hdparm is useful for CD drives, as it allows to lower down speed (and noise).

ah, okay. I just installed Arch using a cd on my laptop, and when I installed hdparm afterwards hdparm reported that dma was not enabled, I had to manually turn it on. It is possible that kernel 2.6 turn dma on on certain machine, but not all types.

OK, I'm sure that having hdparm on install CD would be nice, especially for solving such speed-related problems on some hardware configurations.
Maybe some hdparm-howto should be added too.

With the new hd layout this seems not to be an issue anymore (at least not on my machine)
