The owncloud package takes source files from tags on GitHub, but these are not official releases in any way. These packages will lack important files such as integrity signatures (produced when releases are made by ownCloud, cryptographic signatures to improve security) and performance-boosting generated files. Also, the version as shown in the ownCloud web UI is wrong, always displaying a git version (since the source is from GitHub) rather than the actual version.

The only official source for ownCloud is from owncloud.org; the tarballs there already contain all required files, so it is unnecessary to separately pull down apps, 3rdparty etc.
