I'm also seeing this, as are others on the forums. I just did a rebuild in a clean chroot, package is 1.09 MiB smaller and runs fine. Dirty chroot?

Rebuilding in a clean chroot produces a package with the same size here. Maybe some evil cflags, though unlikely because 2.2.2-1 works. Will investigate.

After installing projectm as mentioned in  FS#47506 , I was able to start VLC again.

In case it helps with triaging, for me it works on an AMD FX-4100 (march=bdver1) but segfaults on an Intel Core 2 Duo L9400 (march=core2). It does work fine on the latter after rebuilding. Also, it seems to be an interface issue, as playback with 'cvlc' works in the first place.

Segfaults on Core 2 Duo T9300. Playback with 'cvlc' works.

Edit: can't reproduce after vlc reinstall, now works as expected. Didn't touch my .config/vlc or anything else.

I confirm the issue on Manjaro, kernel 4.4, Nvidia proprietary drivers. cvlc works correctly. Downgrading to version 2.2.2-1 helped.

After updating to VLC 2.2.2-2 from the previous version in Extra, it failed to start.
After reinstalling with the command below, it works normally.

pacman -Rns vlc && pacman -S vlc

Ok, that just doesn't make sense, broken mirror? OP, Doug, can you try reinstalling as well?
Comment by Doug Newgard (Scimmia) - Tuesday, 08 March 2016, 14:00 GMT
This seems to be gone in vlc 2.2.2-3. The installed size is the same as my earlier rebuild as well.

VLC 2.2.2-3 works here as well
