Description:

Yesterday, I ran a general update of all packages on my wife's notebook, an IBM X42 (after a 2 week update break). We use XFCE4 as GUI and NetworkManager to connect to wireless networks. As GUI for NetworkManager we use the network-manager-applet (nm-applet).

Since yesterday's update, the icon of nm-applet is missing from xfce4-panel's notification area. The task 'nm-applet' is running and the notebook gets connected properly to our wifi. There had also not been any update of NetworkManager or nm-applet recently. Thus I believe that these packages are fine.

I have googled and found that this had been a topic for many users between 2010 and 2011. It seems that this problem is back. One of the advises given in some posts was to remove and add the notification area. Whenever I do this, i.e. remove the notification area while nm-applet is running and then add it back, the icon is back. But this is only a temporary workaround, after reboot I have the same problem again.

Another advise was to install the xfce4-indicator-plugin, as this would show the nm-applet icon. I can install it from AUR, but I don't see it it in the list of items that can be added to the panel.

Interestingly, after yesterday's update I see a new icon in the notification area: pasystray (Pulse Audio try icon). This AUR package had always been installed, but the icon was never displayed up to now.

I believe that this is an xfce4-panel and/or GTK problem due to recent package updates.

Additional info:
* package version(s): xfce4-panel: 4.12.0-1, network-manager-applet: 1.0.0-1

Steps to reproduce:
1. install XFCE4 and NetworkManager / network-manager-applet
2. start nm-applet
