                       Xorg.0.log.old
                         Xorg.0.log.old

If I chmod 666 /dev/tty* it will then launch to a blank screen (Acer C720 chromebook) or get stuck on an empty text cursor (Intel NUC Core i5).
I boot to a text console and use startxfce4. I don't have an .xinitrc or .xsession file. So maybe related to
FS#44285as well.
