It would be nice to be able to use DEBUG_LDFLAGS in addition to DEBUG_CFLAGS and DEBUG_CXXFLAGS.

What LDFLAGS would you add to improve debugging?

To use ThreadSanitizer, you need to add -pie and -fsanitize=thread to LDFLAGS (likewise with AddressSanitizer).
