GDM (/opt/gnome/libexec/gdmgreeter or /opt/gnome/libexec/gdmlogin) runs as nobody user and tries to read .Xauthority from user's home directory. If home directory has no read access to everyone then GDM exits and shows login screen again.

gdm runs as root here and has no problem at all reading .Xauthority files in my home directory. I can't reproduce this.

Hmm, looks like I can now. This fails for remote hosts where the creation of .Xauthority is required. When logging on to :0, this isn't needed at all.
