Care to explain why?

virt-manager is a GTK application, virt-install is a console application.

It would be nice to be able to create new virtual machines with virt-install, without having to install all the UI dependencies of virt-manager. This would be very usefull for headless virtual machine hosts.

fyi, debian splits the package too:

I second this, splitting the package would be most appreciated. I run a minimal laptop setup and only require occasional access to KVM to install a VM. Virt-manager would require me to install an enormous amount of dependencies which serve me no real purpose when only using the CLI virtinst tool. Please consider a split, thanks.

I think it is upstream bug because of I cannot find easy way to split them. But I've fixed it in lazy way. virt-install contains all files, virt-manager is empty package which installs GUI deps and executes post_install script for virtmanager. Please try it.

Thank you.

I did a test and found that the virt-install package requires some more dependencies:

libosinfo
python2-ipaddr
python2-gobject
