DetailsDespite of the configure help stating that XBMC will be built with pulseaudio support if available by default, this doesn't seem the case with the package in the repository.
Since the devs added a PA passthrough sink in version 13.0, this became a real solution to the problem where other software or even xbmc itself claimed ownership of an audio output device, making it unavailable for passthrough in xbmc. Building it with the --enable-pulse will force pulseaudio support to be built in. This will make PA manage passthrough, it will take some configuration using pavucontrol to enable it for various formats. I have tried and confirmed that running it without pulseaudio installed will revert it to it's old behaviour. Please build XBMC with pulseaudio support |

FS#36819.The main issue was the lack of a PA passthrough sink. This was added in version 13.0.
There is no --disable-pulse flag in the current PKGBUILD. Pulseaudio is not listed as a makedepend. Maybe the packager just doesn't have it installed.
It is listed as an optdepend, but in the current state it won't do anything.
I myself am sufficiently satisfied with the current state of pulseaudio support in xbmc.
could it be a good idea to add the other guy to the email notification and see what he thinks before making any changes?
