Simple bug, though. nvidia-libgl contains symlinks to /usr/lib/libGL.so.XXX.XX, but these shared libraries seem to have been moved to /usr/lib/nvidia/
I got around this issue by making the symlinks myself;
file /usr/lib/libGL.so*
/usr/lib/libGL.so: symbolic link to `nvidia/libGL.so.331.49'
/usr/lib/libGL.so.1: symbolic link to `libGL.so'

WTF?! freaky stuffs, re-installed for the sake of checking, and no issue now... wierd, but I don't see how two people could have the same issue in the same day if there isn't *something* wierd going on...

I can confirm this, too. Same error message here. I've an Optimus setup, but suffered the same issues. Adding "rcutree.rcu_idle_gp_delay=1" to the kernel parameters fixed my issue.

This appeared in 3.13 or late 3.12 in conjunction with nvidia 331, I can't track it down precisely. I have the Dell M3800 here.

Really thank you!. Adding "rcutree.rcu_idle_gp_delay=1" to kernel parameters in /boot/syslinux/syslinux.cfg solve the problem:

i've a geforce gt540M and the my computer just turn on with intel graphics driver. if I install nouveau or nvidia drivers the gui doesn't start.

I can confirm dan bruegge's findings. Removing the kernel parameter "rcutree.rcu_idle_gp_delay=1" and installing the latest packages (linux 3.13.6-1 and nvidia 334) shows the same error message to me. Adding the kernel parameter "rcutree.rcu_idle_gp_delay=1" still fixes this bug though. I'm tracking this bug now, let me know, if I can help testing packages.

It would seem like this is the most recent patch: https://ssl.webpack.de/blog.langfinger.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/02_nvidia_3.13.patch

It's quite large and I'm not sure I'm comfortable putting that into the stable repo. Does it cause problems for otherwise unaffected users?

With latest packages (nvidia 337.12-1, cuda 6.0.37-2, linux 3.14.4-1): still same bug. Fix is still working by adding "rcutree.rcu_idle_gp_delay=1" to kernel parameters.

I have the same issue with linux 3.14.4-1 and nvidia 337.12-1 or nvidia 337.19-1 (and corresponding versions of nvidia-utils and nvidia-libgl).

Adding "rcutree.rcu_idle_gp_delay=1" to the default kernel parameters for GRUB doesn't fix the issue for me.

My first thought from this is "oh, kernel modules haven't reloded" but this is coming right after a reboot, so I think that shouldn't be an issue.

All components were updated to 337.19-1. I just tried regenerating /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d with nvidia-xconfig, and while diff shows that one field did expect a different number of parameters under the new version (versus some 331 version IIRC), this did not fix the problem. I also have:

@ acbecker, it sounds like you need to update your initramfs file to use the new nvidia kernel module. Try "sudo mkinitcpio -p linux" and reboot.
I'm not sure if this shouldn't happen automatically when upgrading nvidia (or any package with a kernel module).

I am experiencing the a similar issue with linux-3.15.1-1 and nvidia-337.25-3. Downgrading to linux 3.14.6-1 and nvidia 337.25-1 allow X to successfully start on my machine. I have a GeForce GTX 560.

Note my journal.txt attachment below covers several reboots with the combination where X wasn't working as I was troubleshooting a bit before downgrading the packages.

Have you tried linux 3.15 + patch in combination with nvidia-337.25-3 (not 340.17 beta)? I've had 1 out the 2 boots since I built linux 3.15 + patch cause X to fail as before.

Do I need to use the beta nvidia as well as the patch?

If I followed that correctly, this problem has been fixed in upstream and will soon become available in linux, right? You guys ok with me closing this at this point?
