Cantata wants me to install mpd. It shouldn't because Cantata is just an mpd client and mpd doesn't need to reside on my machine.

Are you not missing something? MPD is an Optional Dependency of Cantata's package. Why would pacman install it?

@goetzc, the 64-bit package of cantata has mpd as a hard dependency. The 32-bit package OTOH has it as an optional dependency as you say.

.PKGINFO of cantata-1.1.3-2-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz has this:

depend = mpd

Please rebuild the package.
