So, then, the final workaround was to downgrade to kernel 3.4.3-1 and keep sna enabled. This fixes all the glitches and does not hang my machine. It does cause gnome-shell to leak a lot of memory though, so I need to keep restarting the shell from time-to-time. Sadly, there is no happy place for me right now.
