The current version of VLC in testing 2.0.5-3 does not play Windows Media ASX streams as for example on http://www.zdf.de/ZDFmediathek/beitrag/video/1841148/?bc=svp;sv0&flash=off
The video is ok, but about half of the audio packages are lost and thus you only get to hear more white noise than real audio signal.

To make it work again downgrade to vlc 2.0.5-2, ffmpeg 1:1.0.1-1 and x264 to extra-repo is neccessary.

Same problem with mms:// like this: mms://wm.streaming.kataweb.it/reflector:44434
the only solution is to go downgrade:
ffmpeg-1:1.0.1-1
vlc-2.0.5-2
x264-20121113-1

Confirm the problem, except that the version is not only in testing but in extra!

I tried to git bisect ffmpeg. I wasn't able to successfully build every revision but my guess is

The following stream from Korea (Arirang radio) sounds really bad as well:
mms://s2.arirang.co.kr/FM_Live

Of course it sounds great in MPlayer...not sure what's up with VLC

I attached a short recording of what it sounds like in vlc for those who don't have this problem.

This issue has been fixed upstream in the VLC-2.0 GIT tree. You can install the patched version using the vlc-stable-git package in the AUR. It looks like Arch isn't going to get the fix into the mainline repo until VLC 2.0.6 (which still has 3 active bugs to be fixed before release).
