Details

According to util-linux Documentation/deprecated.txt[#1] these tools (newgrp/vipw/vigr) should be used from shadow-utils package instead of util-linux.

Also looking at source[#2] of these tools you can see: "This command is deprecated. The utility is in maintenance mode, meaning we keep them in source tree for backward compatibility only. Do not waste time making this command better, unless the fix is about security or other very critical issue."

util-linux-2.22-2
shadow-4.1.5.1-1

Reason for closing:  Not a bug
Additional comments about closing:  upstream has marked these no longer deprecated.

Hrmm, seems weird given that I just recently made some changes to vipw/vigr that weren't all that critical. git blame shows that these were marked as deprecated as of 2007/2008. I'll talk to upstream about this and see if this documentation is still accurate.

Regardless, I'd prefer to hold onto the util-linux version as long as possible since there's almost zero hope of ever seeing a bugfix for vipw/vipr/newgrp (or anything else) in shadow-utils. The alioth maintainer is incredibly dodgy and is, for all intents and purposes, mostly MIA.

@Dave: is there any news about this from util-linux upstream? Thanks.

Been lazy, haven't done anything here. I'm quite sure that newgrp is deprecated, though.
