When trying to open a videofile of any format mplayer wouldn't play it. Playing audio files works. Mplayer also works like normal under X. This is normal. Mplayer wants to output to X, but you have no
working $DISPLAY, so mplayer fails to output the video. You should
specify a different output with -vo.

Adding -vo fbdev2 did the trick for me which makes me embaressed.
I promise to do better research next time.
