Description:
When trying to open a videofile of any format mplayer wouldn't play it.
Playing audio files works.
Mplayer also works like normal under X.

mplayer version 34799-1
kernel 3.3.2-1-ARCH

This is normal. Mplayer wants to output to X, but you have no working $DISPLAY, so mplayer fails to output the video. You should specify a different output with -vo.

Adding -vo fbdev2 did the trick for me which makes me embaressed. I promise to do better research next time.
