Details

After upgrading xf86-video-intel to 2.17.0-2, I get frequent hangs (as in, within 3 minutes of powering up). If it doesn't hang immediately after logging in, I can trigger a hang by switching VTs. I've attached the error message that I get from dmesg. I couldn't find any other error messages in the log files (including everything.log and Xorg.*.log.old). Downgrading to 2.17.0-1 fixes the problem.

This is on a ThinkPad x200, whose graphics chip is Intel Corporation Mobile 4 Series, according to lspci. I'm running 64-bit arch.

Additional comments about closing:  User states that it is a kernel bug, no response about that for over 2 months, so we assume this bug has been fixed in the kernel in the meantime.

xf86-video-intel 2.17.0-2 was recompiled against new xcb-util (0.3.8)

maybe you didn't do a full update of your system?

Can't reproduce it here on a HP/Compaq 2230s with Intel Mobile 4 series. Did you actually update your full system, or only a few packages?

Yes, I did a full system update. The reason I reported the bug on xf86-video-intel is because downgrading xf86-video-intel stopped the hangs. Also, that was the most obvious candidate because it was the only low-level package.

The only change between -1 and -2 is the xcb-util rebuild. By downgrading to 2.17.0-1 you broke XvMC. What versions of linux and libdrm are you using at this moment?

I don't have libdrm installed (should I?). I have linux-3.1.4-1 and intel-dri 7.11.2-1.

libdrm is a dependency for xf86-video-intel, without it you can't use the driver at all, so I guess you have it installed.

Ok, so immediately after posting that message, my laptop hung again. So maybe the problem is not really in xf86-video-intel, but the update somehow made it happen more often. I'll try downgrading various other packages and see what happens.

You're right, I do have libdrm, but it was libdrm-git (from AUR), so I didn't see it. I've since downgraded to libdrm from extra (that is, 2.4.27-1), but I'm still seeing hangs on switching VTs.

You could try upgrading to libdrm from testing. Suspected packages:
- xf86-video-intel
- libdrm
- linux
- intel-dri

Those are tied together quite closely, so you might want to check which of them were upgraded lately.

Probably an invalid report. I've tried lots of different combinations of the above packages, but no combination completely stops the hangs. In the end, downgrading the kernel seems to help -- once I've bisected to find the problem, I'll report a bug against the kernel.
