Description: Every time I boot Arch Linux on my Fujitsu Siemens ESPRIMO Mobile laptop, the screen gets dimmed to the lowest possible level. This happens always just a fraction of a second after the message "Waiting for Udev events to be processed" appears on the screen.

Exactly the same behavior occurred when I was booting into Arch Linux installer before even the installation process started.

Additional info:
I verified that the value stored in

/sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/actual_brightness

was indeed 0 (i.e., the minimal). It is very difficult to follow instruction on the installer screen, as well as to operate the computer when what is on the screen is barely visible.

The temporary workaround I found was to execute the command

echo 7 > /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness

as root upon every first log into the computer, or to add that same command to /etc/rc.local


If I shut down the laptop without increasing the display brightness (using the above command), then the laptop starts next time with its display dimmed.

You don't have any power management utilities or acpid installed? Is there any BIOS option regarding energy saving preferences?

I have a acpi 1.6-1 installed.

For your information, my Arch Linux installation is rather minimal.

BIOS does not provide any energy saving preference options.

My original bug report provides a clear and accurate description of the symptoms. I have a habit of updating my system almost daily. Still, nothing has changed since I posted that bug report 3 months ago.
