Since aif now supports syslinux and grub equally, there's no real reason for grub to remain in the base group. syslinux isn't in base.

I support removing from core repo itself as grub-legacy is very old and the devs no longer need to provide sign-offs if its out of core.

I think the best argument for this is that since there is such a strong push to stop using grub-legacy, removing it from the base group would be beneficial in that it wouldn't require grub to be installed then uninstalled when the user chooses to install the new bootloader. Right now, if you install grub2 (haven't tested anything else) then there are some harmless messages about uninstalling it before being able to continue. The most efficient course would be never installing a bootloader in the first place so that these messages don't appear at all, which should streamline and simplify the installation process.

GRUB2 (what upstream calls as GRUB) is reaching 2.00 release. Upstream recently released version 2.00~beta6 .

I agree with dropping 'grub' from base.

The vast majority of people would be better off with syslinux our grub2.

Furthermore, merely installing a boot loader is not enough to get a booting system (unless I'm mistaken), so requiring the admin to instal the bootloader in addition to configuring it does not seem unreasonable.
