Description:
A minimal install of kde (kdebase and phonon-gstreamer) will hang when a newly created used attempts to login to plasma-desktop for the first time.

This is fixed by installing a ttf font package such as ttf-liberation or ttf-dejavu.

By the way, ttf-freefont (a dependency of vlc and so phonon-vlc) does NOT work.
You still need another font package.

The way I would go about this would be to have kdebase-workspace require "ttffont" or something and have ttf-{liberation,dejavu,$OTHERSTHATWORK} provide that.

After some more discussion in the forums it appears that any ttf font package *is* all that is needed - I have tested ttf-dejavu ttf-liberation ttf-freefont ttf-bitstream-vera ttf-linux-libertine ttf-inconsolata on clean VMs and all allowed a sucessfull login.

fireboot in #archlinux confirmed that this was still an issue, but also informed that installing ttf-dejavu fixed the problem.

Perhaps depending on ttf-dejavu is a possible solution, then.

I opened  FS#32870  for enlightenment which suffers from this as well.
I think this should be solved globally. VLC solves this by having optional dependency on two ttf font packages, when essentially only one is needed.

maybe adding ttf-liberation (for example) as dependence for xorg-server?

GNOME solves this by having a dependency on ttf-dejavu, as well as the cantarell font, in gnome-themes-standard so maybe something like that could be done for other DE's as well. I dont know if the forthcoming release of KDE's oxygen font would solve this for KDE.

This is an issue. Installing ttf-dejavu fixed the problem (but any ttf* font package should work).

This is a severe bug. Please add ttf-dejavu as a dependency.
