Description:
the kernel26-2.6.39-1 (now in testing) fails to boot on my machine, everything stops at "Loading modules..". I can just hw reboot.

Additional info:
* package version(s)
kernel26-2.6.39-1, i686

* config and/or log files etc.
My modules array:
MOD_AUTOLOAD="yes"
MODULES=( dm-crypt aes-i586 sha512 sha256 acpi_cpufreq snd_hda_intel !snd_pcsp !pcspkr fuse !wl ssb b43 tg3 sbs vboxdrv vboxnetflt vboxnetadp btusb msr uvcvideo eeprom )

2.6.38.6 and previous work fine. As system is not running properly yet, i don;t know how to provide more info.

The -fallback mode didn't help either. initramfs was remade promerly with kernel upgrade.

My HW:

Reason for closing:  Fixed
Additional comments about closing:  Fixed in 2.6.39.3:
Revert "drm/i915: Enable GMBUS for post-gen2 chipsets"

commit 826c7e4147f902737b281e8a5a7d7aa33fd63316 upstream.

Revert commit 8f9a3f9b63b8cd3f03be9dc53533f90bd4120e5f . This fixes a
hang when loading the eeprom driver (see bug #35572.) GMBUS will be
re-enabled later, differently.

(sorry for assigning it to me: pushed the wrong button).

Suggestions:

Find "modprobe --all" in rc.sysinit and replace it with "modprobe --verbose --all", this might tell you which module is responsible.

Alternatively, comment out your MODULES array, check if you can now boot, and load one module at a time until you get your hang.
Comment by mark (mmm) - Saturday, 21 May 2011, 17:34 GMT
Tom, thank you for advice. modprobe --verbose didn't tell any info.
Manually trying, I figured out that:

!eeprom -> kernel boots ok, though "loading modules.." ends with [FAIL]. Everything seems to work ok so far. (I don't even remember what use I had for eeprom module, shame on me..pbbly some experiments with flash-rom?)

disabling also btusb and msr makes loading modules..happy and [DONE]. (I don't know if it's related).

So to blame is the eeprom module, maybe some others too.
Comment by mark (mmm) - Saturday, 21 May 2011, 17:37 GMT
PS, I also have unsolved kernel-suspend-resume issues since lately, but i don;t think it's related

Comment by Tom Gundersen (tomegun) - Saturday, 21 May 2011, 17:40 GMT
I can confirm that manually "modprobe eeprom" hangs. However, it does not hang the kernel only modprobe.

I guess these issues should be reported on the kernel bugzilla, as it does not seem to be Arch specific.
Comment by mark (mmm) - Saturday, 21 May 2011, 20:21 GMT
ok, just reported upstream, let's see what they can do.
https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=35572

PS: Tom, could you please have a glance at the bug mentioned above and tell if it relates to pm-utils? so i could also ask upstream devs what to do with it? Thank you
