Details
libcurl is currently built without support for c-ares (also
in extra). c-ares provides asynchronous DNS requests and
resolution, which gets around the fact that the gethostby*()
family of functions are blocking calls. Until recently,
c-ares was unable to resolve DNS requests with ipv6 servers,
but this was implemented in version 1.7 [1].

c-ares support has been battle tested for a decade now in curl. It
should be given another shot. DOH support in curl is dependent on
c-ares builds.
