It would be nice if the rxvt-unicode package is build with this hints patch: http://lg.ath.cx/downloads/misc/hints.diff
(http://awesome.naquadah.org/wiki/Hints)

It avoids display problems in correspondence with some tiling window managers. (See link)

Reason for closing:  Won't implement
Additional comments about closing:  Upstream doesn't apply the patch, we neither.

I have come across this issue in this past.
The only problem I can see with this proposal is that I did contact upstream a long time ago, and some of the developers said that the "main" developer (forgot his name) wasn't planning on applying this patch. So I think someone should check if this is still true.

This patch is applied in the community rxvt-unicode-256color.

Speaks something again to also apply the patch to this version? I can't imagine that this patch breaks anything.

I talked with upstream on this issue, and they mentioned that this patch is just a workaround, this is a problem with the window manager.

I think upstream is wrong and it's simply an unimplemented feature in urxvt, rather than a bug in either urxvt or tiling window managers. The ICCCM doesn't require window managers to follow size hints or clients to respond well to being in non-preferred sizes. Thus, both programs are acting normally.

Tiling window managers do not ignore size hints because they don't want to bother implementing them but because some think it provides a cleaner interface in tiling window managers. In fact, it's usually an option whether or not to follow size hints.

This seems like a simple way to increase functionality of urxvt by allowing it to respond well to a situation that some users want, even though the protocols don't require a good response. If upstream doesn't accept this, I still think Arch should, as it has a higher than typical concentration of users who use tiling window managers.
