Description:
Starting with the last update of xorg server, I'm facing with minor (but annoying) bugs.
If I enable KMS (my removing nomodeset form the kernel boot parameters), the screen freezes randomly for few seconds, in which the mouse pointer moves, but everything else is freezed. Not even the keyboard works, so I cannot switch to text mode, for instance.
If I disable KMS (option nomodeset at boot), the freezing goes away, but some (small) area of the screen are randomly corrupted; this seems to happens when switching application with alt-tab. Resizing the application, or forcing to redraw, clears the problem.

Try this:

http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/releasenotes/1004#Window%20corruption%20with%20older%20ATI%20graphics%20cards

Please provide dmesg output related to your Ati card and drm initilization and Xorg.0.log. Also check the Xorg ati list for know issues. It's probably already solve in .34 rc kernels.

I'm attaching the full dmesg output and the Xorg.0.log.
I'll also try the workaround suggested in the post you highlighted and make you know if it solves the problem
   dmesg (28.3 KiB)
   Xorg.0.log (47.7 KiB)

your logs look pretty good for UMS. you boot with "nomodeset" - remove this. KMS is the way to go and upstream doesn't put much effort into UMS anymore. Please provide logs for KMS. If it's an integrated card you may wayt to try to boot with "pci=nomsi" boot option.

The workaround suggested in the ubuntu forum (Option "RenderAccel" "off" in xorg.conf) fixes the graphical glithes I was experiencing with UMS. I've switched to UMS from KMS because the random freezes that I've experienced with KMS on was waaay worse than the random corrputions I've got with UMS.

So:
KMS: random freezes: about 5 seconds every 2 minutes
UMS: random corruptions of art of the screens
UMS+workaround: OK
KMS+workardoud: ??? I'll try and make you know.

I've tried to enable KMS with the workaround suggested in the ubuntu forum, and I can confirm that it fixes the random freezings.
So:
KMS: random freezes: about 5 seconds every 2 minutes
UMS: random corruptions of parts of the screens
UMS+workaround: OK
KMS+workaround: OK

We will see if the .34 kernel fixes the problem without the needing for the workaround.

How's state with .34 kernels + Xorg18 in testing?
Comment by Andreas Radke (AndyRTR) - Monday, 21 June 2010, 12:23 GMT
Is this solved in Xorg18/kernel 2.6.34? State?
Comment by Simone Lazzaris (ziopera) - Tuesday, 22 June 2010, 08:47 GMT
I've tried with kernel 2.6.34 + xorg 1.8.1 but the scenario is unchanged:

KMS: random freezes: about 5 seconds every 2 minutes
KMS+workaround: OK

I didn't tried the UMS setting. What I DID see, anyway was that the freeze time appears to be shorter - just 2,3 seconds instead of 5.

So i confirm that the upgrade didn't fix the issue.

How's state with recent Xorg and .35 kernels in testing?
Comment by Andreas Radke (AndyRTR) - Saturday, 30 October 2010, 20:58 GMT
state? we have .36 kernel, new Xorg and new Mesa in testing.

I've disabled the workaround (Option "RenderAccel" "off" in xorg.conf) and I'll let you know if the small freezes will persist.

So far, so good. I' didn't noticed any problem with the current (current, not testing) versions of kernel, xorg and mesa. I think we can close the ticket.
