Description:

After the 2009-12-29 migration of the 2.6.32 kernel to core, my wireless card has gotten flaky when making connections. If a connection can be established it is fairly stable, but there are problems when making wireless associations. Downgrading to kernel26 2.6.31.6-1 resolves this issue.

Additional info:
* package version(s)
kernel26 2.6.32.5-1

* config and/or log files etc.
System: Acer Aspire One D150 Netbook
Wireless Card: Atheros AR5001. Full lspci dump is attached as "Atheros_AR5001.txt"
Driver In Use: ath5k
Kernel Log: Attached as "messages.log"

Steps to reproduce:

1) Put NETWORKS=(menu) in your rc.conf so netcfg-menu is run during boot.
2) When prompted, use netcfg to connect to a Wireless Network that uses 128-bit WEP encryption. It should fail to make a wireless association. All that appears in the kernel log while connecting is:

Jan 24 11:47:04 aao1 kernel: ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): wlan0: link is not ready

3) After logging in, run "sudo netcfg-menu" and try to connect to the same network again. It should succeed. After connecting, it a stable connection.
4) Run "sudo netcfg -a" to terminate the connection. Once terminated, you cannot re-connect no matter how many times you run "sudo netcfg-menu" again. The error this time is that it cannot get an IP address from the DHCP server.

Reverting to kernel26 2.6.31.6-1 resolves this issue. It will connect the first time, and I can disconnect/re-connect several times without issue.

It has been observed that WPA+TKIP networks seem to encounter fewer issues WEP-128 networks.

Please report this to upstream. This is the best way to resolve this type of issues. Thanks.

Thank you for the fast response. I figured this is likely an upstream issue but at the same time I'm not sure if Arch's version of the kernel gets additional patches, so I thought it would be better to post here first.

You can view my upstream report at:

Thanks and best regards,

No problem ;) Good. The only aditional patch in kernel26 is to support aufs2 out-of-tree, nothing in logic is changed, it make "public" some "private" functions.
