Description:
epstopdf is supposed to be in the package texlive-bin with a symlink:
/usr/bin/epstopdf -> /usr/share/texmf-dist/scripts/epstopdf/epstopdf.pl
but /usr/share/texmf-dist/scripts/epstopdf/ does not exist anymore.

Yes, it appears that the file epstopdf.pl was removed upstream, or moved to another location, for some reason. I'll look into this, but in the meanwhile you can download it manually from ctan and put it somewhere in your $PATH.

Thanks François, I'll do that. Anyway, in debian, epstopdf is in a separate package (texlive-extra-utils), I don't think it's irrelevant.

BTW, you can also try epspdf instead (it requires ruby)

Couldn't get epspdf working - got errors about a case statement in epspdfrc.rb so instead I downloaded epstopdf.pl from

http://www.ctan.org/tex-archive/support/epstopdf/

put it in /usr/share/texmf-dist/scripts/epstopdf/ changed owner to root and permissions to 755. That worked fine so I thought I'd share to save others some time.

Yeap, epspdf is indeed incompatible with ruby 1.9. This will be fixed soon, according to a recent posting on the tex-live@tug.org ML.
