The manpage man5/modprobe.d.5.gz contains nothing but a ROFF link to modprobe.conf.5:

.so modprobe.conf.5

This is a broken link, and should look like this instead:

.so man5/modprobe.conf.5

In its current state, "man modprobe.d" produces an error (and sometimes manages to open the page anyway).

mandb aborts writing the entire index - mandb won't abort immediately after complaining about this problem, but will complete its analysis, only aborting when it's time to write the index. This causes the mandb cron job to run long every day since changes to the index just "pile up" as no mandb run ever has any impact.

This appears to be a regression based on the next-to-last comment in  bug 14467 .
