Description:

Setting up a template to use as default in Go-OpenOffice.org Writer causes the Writer application to crash while starting. It is only possible to start Writer after that by removing or renaming the template manually, ignoring the error message, then selecting File, Templates, Organize, Commands, Reset Default Template, Text Document.

Additional info:
* package version(s): go-openoffice 3.1.1.4-1, KDE 4.3.3-1

Steps to reproduce:

1. Start Go-OpenOffice.org Writer in KDE4 (UI need not necessarily be in KDE4 integration mode).
2. Select File, Templates, Save.... Type a name for the template, make sure My Templates is selected, then click OK.
3. Select File, Templates, Organize....
4. Double-click My Templates, right-click the template created in step 2, then select Set As Default Template.
5. Click the Close button.
6. Select File, Exit.
7. Try to start Go-OpenOffice.org Writer again.

Looks like an upstream issue. Please report to it if not already reported, and put the link here. Thanks.

This is not an upstream issue. Confirmed correct behaviour on Ubuntu 9.10 and Windows.

I am having exactly the same experience. If I try to create a new template, to set as the default template for Writer, Writer then crashes when I try to create a new document. I can open already existing documents, but I cannot create new documents. They appear for a split second and then immediately disappear.

please check go-openoffice 3.2.0.4 pkg.

Thanks for checking in on this issue. Unfortunately, 3.2.0.4 doesn't fix it for me.

I changed my system from 64bit to 32bit and experience basically the same problem. In 64bit, as I said above, if I tried to open a new document, it would appear for a split second and then disappear, before you could really see it. But other open documents stayed open and worked fine. In 32bit, if I try to open a new document go-ooo just crashes altogether, including open documents, and I get a window saying office has crashed. This is, as above, using a customized default template.

I can confirm this bug, and I should say that it also happens if I try to use a "Default" Template.
Just open Impress, select "From template" and you will get a dialogue box Saying: "Error loading the template: General Error". If you press OK, you get a blank screen where a preview of the template should be. Clicking "Create" after this error will result in impress not starting.

Please check if the Vanilla OOo 3.2.0 pkg is also affected. Then report it upstream either to OOo issuezilla or to the Novell tracker for go-openoffice.

I am getting the very same error on go-oo 3.2.0.9 when trying to create a new presentation from impress.
Do the errors get logged somewhere?

I'm still seeing the same problem with Writer and 3.2.0.9

Do you get helpful messages when starting soffice from cammdn line? You need to find out what part is broken. We use a lot of system lobs. One my be incompatible or may require a patch to work with OOo. Find out what code is used.

I have tried that before, but if I start go-oo from bash directly by issuing:
$oofromtemplate

The process get immediately backgrounded and doesn't display anything in the terminal window.
Is there any way to let it output any information at all?
All the other go-oo executables I have tried (ooffice and soffice) also background the program, not leaving me with any information.

ask the upstream devs in their irc channel what code is used and may cause this.
Comment by c b (cb474) - Monday, 12 April 2010, 19:35 GMT
I also don't get any verbose output when launching go-openoffice from the command line. The only thing I get is when I try to open a new document from a template and go-openoffice crashes, I get: "terminate called after throwing an instance of 'com::sun::star::ucb::InteractiveAugmentedIOException'"

Please ask upstream what code/system-libs may cause this.

I'm getting the same error with go-openoffice... any way to get a workaround?
Comment by Andreas Radke (AndyRTR) - Monday, 07 June 2010, 16:56 GMT
please test final vanilla OOo 3.2.1 and go-oo 3.2.1.3

I don't know if is the same issue, but with the the new version I'm still getting an error when loading templates on Impress (extra/go-openoffice 3.2.1.3-1).

The vanilla Version, oo.org 3.2.1-1 does not have this problem.
The templates work fine in this version, so it seems go-oo specific.
Comment by c b (cb474) - Tuesday, 08 June 2010, 08:51 GMT
With vanilla OOo 3.2.1 I do not have the problem. But still crashes when try to open a new file, based on a custom template, with go-oo 3.2.1.3.
Comment by Pablo Olmos de Aguilera Corradini (pablox) - Tuesday, 08 June 2010, 23:08 GMT
I just tried vanilla and works ok. It looks like it has to do with go-oo packaging...
Comment by Andreas Radke (AndyRTR) - Wednesday, 09 June 2010, 16:00 GMT
...or go-oo code because vanilla and go-oo are build with the same configuration options where possible. ask for help in #go-oo!
Comment by Pablo Olmos de Aguilera Corradini (pablox) - Wednesday, 09 June 2010, 16:24 GMT
Or go-oo code of course, yes; I'll ask there!

Any progress on this issue?
Comment by Andreas Radke (AndyRTR) - Saturday, 30 October 2010, 12:32 GMT
Please check state in Libreoffice from official repos that is based on go-oo and is going to replace go-oo when it becomes final.
Comment by c b (cb474) - Saturday, 30 October 2010, 22:29 GMT
I hadn't checked this in a long time, but I don't seem to have the problem anymore with 3.2.1.6-1, in 64bith Arch.
