Have a look at  FS#13118 

We thought the patch would be applied to the next release. But it will only be in 0.6.0 :
http://www.freelists.org/post/teeworlds/PATCHES-Fix-datadir-search,1

So the patch should be kept for 0.5.x releases.

In the new version (0.5.2-2) everything works well.
