Description:
I think pidgin should use the new split_package technique to split pidin into three seperate packages: + pidgin + finch + libpurple I think this because a user using pidgin (the gui) won't need finch (negligable amount of space but still...), a user using finch is unlikely to use the pidgin gui (20+MB), and yet some users (like myself) use telepathy-haze which only needs libpurple. Pidgin and Finch of course both need libpurple. I've done an initial split_package PKGBUILD if it helps explain my thoughts in more concrete terms: http://zeqadious.homelinux.net/arch-linux/sources/extra/pidgin/ |

Alexander is MIA, so I guess another maintainer is needed.
This would make some sense ONLY if libpurple was a commonly used library and were needed by a bunchload of applications like say libcups.
It you want to spare less than a mb by not installing finch, or a couple more by not using the GUI build it yourself.
Finch is already in unsupported maintained by a developer http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=14679
Maybe you could convince him to move to community for you.
now when somebody is installing telepathy-haze which is needed by empathy, he ends up with pidgin too. which in the first place he didn't wanted if he opted to use empathy
