xfce4 is a group of packages, not a metapackage.
Whats missing?

Try reinstalling gtk2 and shared-mime-info.
Comment by Chris Darnell (cedeel) - Sunday, 01 March 2009, 09:42 GMT
shared-mime-info was not installed by default. Installing that makes it work.

I'll add it as dependency to gtk2, without this gtk2 can't detect images it seems. I think we have another bugreport open about this, but it didn't have enough information to solve this bug.

@JGC: you mean  FS#12955  ?

That bug is possibly related, but I've seen more of these bugs.

I had the exact same problem when I installed 2009.02 on my intel core duo (32bit) notebook. The problem boiled down to not having shared-mime-info installed. It seems that this also caused Thunar not to start up (it exited with a Thunar-ERROR: ..blablabla... error message.) I have also seen some forum posts about this. One should try to bring this issue to attention, because it actually makes xfce4 a broken group. However it seems only several people are aware of thins since most people are not installing their arch distro anew and thus they already have shared-mime-info.
