I have an Atheros card which uses the ath5k driver. I'm using wicd to manage my connections and I haven't seen that behavior with any of the routers or APs I connect to at home/school.
Can you try with another AP or router from another brand and check if this still happens?

$ lspci -v | grep -A6 Atheros
06:00.0 Ethernet controller: Atheros Communications Inc. AR242x 802.11abg Wireless PCI Express Adapter (rev 01)
Subsystem: Device 1a3b:1026
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 19
Memory at fe9f0000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=64K]
Capabilities: <access denied>
Kernel driver in use: ath5k_pci
Kernel modules: ath5k

Yeah, this is known bug with ath5k, maybe try upgrading your kernel.
