Description:
When playing a DVD title, selected subtitles are not displayed, e.g.
mplayer dvd://1 -aid 129 -sid 3

When using an external vobsub file, subtitles _are_ displayed:
mplayer dvd://1 -aid 129 -vobsub subtitles -vobsubid 0

Vobsub file was created with mencoder (this is still working):
mencoder dvd://1 -sid 3 -vobsubout subtitles -vobsuboutindex 0 -nosound -ovc copy -o /dev/null

I saw this problem posted several times on MPlayer-users mailing list, e.g.

Workaround is to press 'j' to cycle through subtitles.
